Misty rain blew in and out all day with over seventy keen golfers contesting the February monthly medals at the Lithgow Golf Course with numbers being bolstered by visitors from Blackheath, Royal Sydney Golf Club, Long Reef and Kiama Golf Clubs. The conditions made scoring difficult with only two golfers breaking their handicaps. The soft fairways offered no ‘run’ while the greens were tricky and wet with the men golfers playing back on the blue markers making the course extremely long. The winner of the medals were (in A, B and C sequence) Justin Nelson, Brodie Carter and Graeme Osborne.
The A grade stroke winner who was only one of two golfers to break their handicaps and he was Justin Nelson (1). His win was no surprise as he is regularly one of the top performers each week and has the skills to handle the tough conditions. He finished with a score of 71 nett which consisted of three bogies and three birdies and the rest pars. Runner up and best scratch score was a family affair with Corey Oldfield (3) runner up to Nelson with 72 nett while his father Bill (+1) took out the best scratch score with 71.
The B grade winner was another of the good young crop of golfers coming through with Brodie Carter (12) playing two consistent nines of 42 off the stick for an 18 hole score of 72 nett. After a countback the runner up voucher went to Chris Goodsell (15) with a score of 74 nett. Best scratch score went to Brian Bourke (11) with a score of 86 on a countback which was a good effort considering Bourke has only been back to competition golf for a couple of weeks after being out on a long medical break.
It was an exciting battle in C grade between Deanna Goodsell (27) and her playing partner Heidi Inwood (26). The pair after nine holes were tied on 50 off the stick. Goodsell edged ahead with a 47 on the back nine compared to Inwood’s 49. The winner Goodsell along with Justin Nelson was the other person to break their handicap.
